Early civilizations used large jars (or Ollas) made of Terra Sigillata to store grain and other edibles. Large storage jars were also used to hold water. The water evaporated through the porous clay, keeping the water cool on hot days. Many of these storage jars were very utilitarian and lacked decoration. However, many were used to store items to be used in sacred ceremonies. These jars were highly decorated with meaningful symbols. I continue to enjoy making Terra Sigillata Olla’s, imagining the magical properties associated with the surface designs.
